THE MEN OF THE CHURCH

 

Men have organized to build the

steps into the church and to install

the hardwood floor in the nave.

It has been their responsibility to

do many of the repairs and upkeep

to maintain the beauty of our

building over the years. There

were early organized men’s groups, who met regularly for both

A CHURCH FOR SEASONAL PARISHIONERS

 

Summer parishioners have played an important role in supporting Christ Church. Earliest records show that liberal contributions were made by our summer visitors and their generosity continues. Many stained-glass windows were given by them. Their donations have supported many of the major projects, as well as, ensuring that the buildings were kept in repair, and that a rector could be paid.

 

THE CHURCH TODAY

 

At present we have an active choir, altar guild, a small Sunday school, and a pastoral care group, that celebrates the ninety-year-old residents in the Clayton community in December for Christmas and in June with one big birthday party for all of them. This committee also assists with visiting and taking meals to the shut-ins. Christ Church parishioners and friends have been very generous with their time, talents and money since the very beginning.

 

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER PARISHES

 

The other churches along the river, St. Paul’s, LaFargeville; Church of St. Lawrence, Alexandria Bay; and St. John’s, Cape Vincent; have a close relationship with Christ Church. Mr. Lockwood organized St. Paul’s while he was working in Clayton from 1868 until 1873. These two churches shared a rector for many years. In 1991, when St. Paul’s congregation was forced to close its doors, the members transferred to Christ Church, and many of their records and furnishings are here. While both Fr. Talbot and Fr. Hutchins were in Clayton, they served both Church of St. Lawrence and St. Peter’s Redwood until November 1968.
